Chipmunk model airplane plan

Chipmunk

MAN's Chipmunk

This excellent multi-channel RC machine can be a double winner for you, it's a fine pattern machine that can win Class III unlimited controls and then turn around and win a scale event as well.

This plan is anything but 'rare'. Kit sales thrive all over the world. Media is rare so similar models used for flying characteristics. CG Super Chipmunk is my favourite 0.61 cc plane in my hanger. I'd suggest to add all the options especially for flight options. These Chipmunk models were made to punch holes in the sky. Try a 0.75 two stroke or a 0.91 four stroke for unbelievable speed and handling. IMHO never use anything plastic other than the canopy sections on any flying model. Make your own moulds as I often do or find complimentary parts in fibreglass.

This plan is fairly clear and the article is a reprint right out of MAN magazine. I have a SIG astro Hog that uses similar wood stock for the servo rods but I wouldn't recommend it as the extensions have little or no travel when surfaces are under stress. Go with a dual linkage setup and upgrade to modern control rods. You really want stiff control but as with most models never exceed the throws on any plan.
Better to run low rates than to pick up splinters and what's left of your engine.

The model grew out of a MAN article in the August 1966 issue of that showed a three-view of the Chipmunk in the "Planes Worth Modelling" feature. Considerable work was required to convert the full-sized plane into a model that would be faithful to scale but would be able to compete in the acrobatic ("pattern") radio control contests. The design has a tail wheel that makes it a bit tricky to taxi, especially in cross winds. It also uses an inverted engine that enhances the scale appearance and pays dividends in acrobatic flying.

About the Full Size Airplane

The deHavilland Canada DHC-1 "Chipmunk" is a tandem, two-seat, single-engined primary trainer aircraft which was the standard primary trainer for the Royal Canadian Air Force, Royal Air Force and several other air forces through much of the post-Second World War years. The de Havilland Chipmunk was the first true postwar aviation project of de Havilland Canada. Today, over 500 DHC-1 Chipmunk (affectionately known as "Chippie") airframes remain airworthy with more being rebuilt every year.

British-built and early Canadian-built Chipmunks are notably different from the later Canadian-built RCAF/Lebanese versions. The later Canadian-built airplanes have a bubble canopy, while early Canadian, and all Portuguese and British examples have the multi-panelled sliding canopy, the rearmost panels of which are bulged for better instructor visibility.

From the 1950's onward, the Chipmunk also became a popular civilian aircraft, being used for training, aerobatics and crop spraying. Most civilian aircraft are ex-military.

Love building and flying. I've always flown on private property and only been involved with clubs twice. I live in southern Ontario Canada near Niagara Falls. I build at least one plane a year. I am fairly new to 3D helicopters.

My name is Donnie and I've been flying planes, helicopters, racing cars and launching rockets since 1970 when I got my first U-control plane from Carl Goldberg models. I finally got my first RC in 1983 a Cessna 182 kit with four channels. My favorite planes are 3D of every sort of aircraft. Anything capable of punching holes in the sky. IRL I work with programming and I use the skills I have to build my own designs and plans. Thank you for the donations.
