Douglas SBD Dauntless model airplane plan

Douglas SBD Dauntless

Berkeley Models, Inc's Douglas SBD Dauntless

The Douglas SBD Dauntless was a World War II American naval scout plane and dive bomber that was manufactured by Douglas Aircraft from 1940 through 1944. The SBD ("Scout Bomber Douglas") was the United States Navy's main carrier-borne scout plane and dive bomber from mid-1940 through mid-1944. The SBD was also flown by the United States Marine Corps, both from land air bases and aircraft carriers. The SBD is best remembered as the bomber that delivered the fatal blows to the Japanese carriers at the Battle of Midway in June 1942.

The most important thing to keep in mind about this plan is that it's from a 1957 Berkeley kit that provided a "fully carved four-piece fuselage". There are drawings of the fuselage cross-section for the experienced model builder to construct a built-up fuselage. It can be done. The wings, too, have no rib diagrams drawn on the plans but as in the fuselage and experienced model builder could rough out and wing ribs and make a fully functional model airplane out of these plans.

One of the things that intrigued me about these plans forced the abundant wire bending to actuate the split dive breaks used in the SBD dauntless. Actuating the Fowler flap are drop-down flap alone is not a terribly daunting task. However, the split flaps where the flaps work independently are together i.e. the flaps can act as a "normal flap" in that the bottom half drops in the top does not deploy. In a dive bombing situation extend i.e. the top flap goes up the bottom flap goes down and back to his air brakes so that when the airplane is in a vertical dive it doesn't exceed maximum airspeed for the pullout. I would build this model from these plans.
