P-63 King Cobra model airplane plan

P-63 King Cobra

Midwest Models's P-63 King Cobra

The P-63 King Cobra was designed by Bell Aircraft in the 1940s to rectify the
performance deficiencies of the P-39 Airacobra. Featuring a mid-fuselage mounted Allison
powerplant driving a three-bladed propeller via a prop shaft extension running through the cockpit,
the King Cobra wasn't able to achieve the stringent performance goals established by the
US Army Air Force and subsequently wasn't approved for US production and use. The
King Cobra however found more favor with the Russian air forces and earned a well-deserved
reputation as a rugged and deadly ground attack weapon. In the end, over 3300 King Cobras
were produced for several nations with the Russians accounting for 70% of the total. The model
shown, designed by Vince Micchia and kitted by Midwest Models, is a sport control line aerobatics
model, designed for a .35 to .40 CID glow engines and featuring coupled flaps and elevator controls,
and a profile fuselage. Only the root rib is shown so a builder will need to "eyeball" a tip rib and create
the remaining ribs by the time-honored "sandwich" method or, for a more modern approach, create
all the rib outlines using a computer drafting program.
