B-24 Liberator 55 inch model airplane plan

B-24 Liberator 55 inch

Lee Kiracofe's B-24 Liberator 55 inch

Let's just say that even though this is the most popular bomber of WW II building this 1:24th scale model is not an easy build. There are several builds by manufacturers at 1:28th scale. It is a great project for a display models for collectors but be aware that this plan is a rare find and an advanced build!

The video shows you the complexities of starting and flying a large 1:9th scale 146 inch 53 pound RC plane. Watch the attention to this maiden flight and you can see that this is not for beginners build or flight. This one uses 23 servos and fibreglass cloth to cover and has 15,000 rivets! Are you still crazy about bombers? Find someone with vast modelling experience in your area that is willing to spend endless hours showing you how to construct and fly this model successfully!

Although the control surfaces are shown the layout for RC components are not. The plan is clear but covered in convoluted written text all over making it very busy to look at. Other than that here are the original specs of this aircraft.

The Consolidated B-24 Liberator is an American heavy bomber, designed by Consolidated Aircraft of San Diego, California. It was known within the company as the Model 32, and some initial models were laid down as export models designated as various LB-30s, in the Land Bomber design category. The B-24 was used in World War II by every branch of the American armed forces, as well as by several Allied air forces and navies, attaining a distinguished war record with its operations in the Western European, Pacific, Mediterranean, and China-Burma-India Theaters and in antisubmarine warfare.

In comparison to the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress, the B-24 was a more modern design, with a higher top speed, greater range, and heavier bomb load. However, it had a lower operational ceiling and was also more difficult to fly in formation at higher altitude due to heavy control forces. The shoulder placement of the B-24's high aspect ratio wing made the aircraft vulnerable to battle damage and in water landings. The B-24 was notorious among American aircrews for its tendency to catch fire! (Ouch) Its shoulder-mounted "Davis wing" did not provide a broad surface for emergency landings, therefore an impact on the fuselage tended to crush it and dislodge turrets. Nevertheless, the B-24 provided excellent service in a variety of roles due to its large payload and very long range. Among its varied uses, it was deployed as the carrier for the 1,000 lb Azon guided bomb.

There existed an opinion among aircrews and a tendency among some strategic bombardment commanders to favour the B-17's rugged qualities and especially its higher operational ceiling above all other considerations. However, the general staff favoured the B-24 and procured it in greater numbers than any other American war-plane. The B-24 remains the most produced heavy bomber in history. At nearly 19,000 units, with over 8,000 manufactured by Ford Motor Company, it holds the distinction as the most-produced American military aircraft.

The B-24's most costly mission was the low-level strike against the Ploiești oil fields, in Romania on 1 August 1943. The attack became disorganized after a navigational error which alerted the defenders and protracted the bomb run from the initial point.

Two B-24s, one B-24A and one Liberator V (Lend Lease B-24J) representing a B-24H, are airworthy as of 2015.

To know if the file is good please download it and open it on a pdf viewer like Adobe pdf viewer and set the view level or zoom level to 100% or 1:1 or full scale or actual size, depending on which version or pdf viewer you are using. Also, using the measuring tool make sure all the parts fit together and have the correct size.

3D Printed Parts
Order 3D Printed Parts for the B-24 Liberator 55 inch

General Information

3D printing allow us to design not only complete airplane models but also parts to complete balsa, foam or even composite model airplanes.

Parts can be designed and printed to fit exactly a model you have or a model you plan to build, even if you are not building this model to the full size plan.

3D Printing, and 3D CAD allow us to create the actual parts to fit on our models but also allow us to create negative molds where we can make composite parts.

I´m adding this service to all the plan listings on the site knowing that not every part you imagine or need can be done, knowing this, jobs will be evaluated case by case and a price estimate will be given on request.

What can be done with 3D Printing:

  • Canopies
  • Cowls
  • Wheel Pants
  • Landing Gears
  • Wing Ribs
  • Motor Mounts
  • Servo Trays
  • Servo Covers
  • Wings
  • Fuselages
  • Complete Models

Full Models, Wings or Fuselages

It is possible to design a complete model for you but keep in mind that this is a lengthy process, many hours are needed to design and test a fully 3D Printed model. The finished model cannot have the same internal structure of the wooden made counterpart because it wouldn´t be possible to print it, it would have to have a structure like the models you can see in the 3D Printed Kits section of the site.

From the outside they are very loyal to the plan but still they have to be printed in sections, typically to fit a 250X210X200 mm cube that is the printer maximum build volume.

3D Printed planes are also heavier than light balsa models, all built up and ready to fly, with an electric power system they are generally a little lighter than the same model if it were powered by a glow engine. Please have a look at the 3D Printed kits section to have an idea on this.

Pricing

I will calculate a price upon request, please contact me here mentioning this PlanID: 79609 and the job you wish me to do.
