Douglas TBD Devastator model airplane plan

Douglas TBD Devastator

Pres Bruning's Douglas TBD Devastator

The Douglas TBD Devastator was a torpedo bomber of the United States Navy, first flying in 1935 and entering service in 1937. At that point, it was the most advanced aircraft flying for the Navy and possibly for any navy in the world. However, the fast pace of aircraft development quickly caught up with it, and by the time of the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor the TBD was already outdated. The model depicted here is a 1/32 (3/8"= 1') free flight rubber scale model designed by Pres Bruning of the Flying Aces Club. The plans are exquisitely detailed and a dedicated scale modeler would be able to produce a stunning scale model using the details on the plans.

If your orders placed during the COVID pandemic are delayed the reason is the reduced number of airline flights and your national mail service not distributing mail as it normally would, please ask at your local post office what is the delay currently, we just can´t tell you any better than they.

The feedback from US customers who ordered during April and May is that orders are being delivered in about one month and a half. If you ordered Priority mail you can use the tracking code I added to the Paypal transaction at the USPS (or any other mail service) website.

What are you ordering:

You are ordering a print from the main PDF file in this listing, it´s exactly like taking this file in a thumb drive to a local print shop and ask them to make a print.

About the plan source:

You should verify if the source file has the quality for the type of construction you intend to do, we will print the file without any kind of enhancement or scaling. To know if the file is good please download it and open it on a pdf viewer like Adobe pdf viewer and set the view level or zoom level to 100% or 1:1 or full scale or actual size, depending on which version or pdf viewer you are using. Also, using the measuring tool make sure all the parts fit together and have the correct size.
In doubt please ask us for an opinion.

Plans Scaling:

We can scale this plan for you. But please keep in mind that if this plan is not vector, if you enlarge it too much the quality will be degraded.

You will receive:

  • Laser Printed plan on good quality Bond paper or/and Tracing Paper and/or Polyester sheet of the PDF file from this listing, depending on what you have purchased.
  • Rolled sheets, up to 5 in the same cardboard tube.
  • Envelope, up to 5 sheets per envelope.
  • Articles and Instructions if they are available and if you order them.
  • Air Mail, Priority, Priority Insured or Normal mail, according to your choice.

About our printers:

We use professional quality laser OCÉ and Canon printers/copiers, these printers use toner, not ink so the printings will be durable and waterproof.

About the different media types:

Bond Paper: White Bond paper, 80 grams per square meter.
Bond Tracing paper: Bond Tracing paper, 90 grams per square meter.
Polyester film: High quality polyester sheet incredibly durable, will resist cuts and glue and can be washed (I use it as sail material on my RC sailboats).

We charge by print length (914mm or 91,4cm or 36in. by the length of the print)
This means that a plan 120cm by 150cm will be charged two times 150cm because it will be printed in two tiles, a plan 91cm by 150cm will be charged one time its length or 150cm and a plan 91cm by 40cm will be charged 40cm.
The system will try to fit a plan in the 91,4cm of the printer width in order to reduce the costs or print length to the maximum. This is the same charging method used in any printshop.

We will use paper or waxed paper padded envelopes for folded plans and hard cardboard tubes with plastic ends for rolled plans, depending on your choice.

3D Printed Parts
Order 3D Printed Parts for the Douglas TBD Devastator

General Information

3D printing allow us to design not only complete airplane models but also parts to complete balsa, foam or even composite model airplanes.

Parts can be designed and printed to fit exactly a model you have or a model you plan to build, even if you are not building this model to the full size plan.

3D Printing, and 3D CAD allow us to create the actual parts to fit on our models but also allow us to create negative molds where we can make composite parts.

I´m adding this service to all the plan listings on the site knowing that not every part you imagine or need can be done, knowing this, jobs will be evaluated case by case and a price estimate will be given on request.

What can be done with 3D Printing:

  • Canopies
  • Cowls
  • Wheel Pants
  • Landing Gears
  • Wing Ribs
  • Motor Mounts
  • Servo Trays
  • Servo Covers
  • Wings
  • Fuselages
  • Complete Models

Full Models, Wings or Fuselages

It is possible to design a complete model for you but keep in mind that this is a lengthy process, many hours are needed to design and test a fully 3D Printed model. The finished model cannot have the same internal structure of the wooden made counterpart because it wouldn´t be possible to print it, it would have to have a structure like the models you can see in the 3D Printed Kits section of the site.

From the outside they are very loyal to the plan but still they have to be printed in sections, typically to fit a 250X210X200 mm cube that is the printer maximum build volume.

3D Printed planes are also heavier than light balsa models, all built up and ready to fly, with an electric power system they are generally a little lighter than the same model if it were powered by a glow engine. Please have a look at the 3D Printed kits section to have an idea on this.

I will calculate a price upon request, please contact me here mentioning this PlanID: 80820 and the job you wish me to do.

I built a model for display from these plans. PBYACE on 27/05/2020 05:10
May 26, 2020. This model part of a Battle of Midway moving diorama, aka a mobile, with a Dumas Walnut scale Zero, Wildcat, and SBD. As there are no TBD kits, building from scratch was my only option. The plans were mailed from Portugal to Coos Bay, Oregon, USA, and arrived within ten days of my order. It's 1/28th scale, making it a perfect match to the Walnut scale kits. As an experienced builder, I found these plans to be very usable. First, the Cons: The plans suffer from the past (and not at all missed) trend of trying to cram everything onto a single sheet. The designer piled artwork on top of the plans, obscuring a lot of the construction details. There's nothing for the bay that the aft end of the torpedo fits in, nor is there any sort of a wing fairing pattern. Nor is there any information on how to make corrugated wing panels. I could have embossed the corrugations into paper and glue that over the wings, but decided the return was low for the work involved and didn't bother. The details of how the wings fit to the fuselage are absent. The details for how the horizontal stabilizer fits through the fuselage are likewise lacking. Instructions were originally part of a "How to Build" article and are missing entirely. Of course, you're left to concoct the canopy on your own. I made a plug and vacuum-formed mine. I bought 1" RC wheels. Pros: Building the framework wasn't particularly difficult. I scanned the plans, printed out the patterns, glued them to sheet balsa and cut them out. It was really not much more work than a print-wood kit. I put blind faith in the builders plans and things fit together nicely, with adaptations for the wing and HS placements. There was a lot of, "This doesn't make sense to me, but I'll follow the plans and hope for the best." Things worked out without too much fuss. I was impressed and much pleased. There were no design errors to correct. The finished model turned out as nice as the other three Dumas laser-cut kits. I now have a cool model that's relatively unique. This is my fifth scratch-built model and somewhere around 30th stick and tissue model. The builder will need experience and confidence to get past the lack of information in the plans. 2 stars off for the absence of instructions and lack of, or obscured, details, a bonus star because I didn't have to rebuild anything due to errors in the design. 4 /5 stars.
