Keil Kraft Phantom Mite model airplane plan

Keil Kraft Phantom Mite

Keil Kraft's Keil Kraft Phantom Mite

Phantom Mite was an all-balsa, 16" span, low wing control line 'trainer' model kitted by the English company,
Keil Kraft, in 1948. The Mite was designed for a small displacement diesel motor as the ignition motors of that
era were quite heavier by comparison, and small displacement glow plug motors weren't yet common. The plane
would be simple to build and fly today powered by either a small diesel motor (as originally intended!) or a Cox
reed valve 049.

You should verify if the source file has the quality for the type of construction you intend to do, we will print the file without any kind of enhancement or scaling. To know if the file is good please download it and open it on a pdf viewer like Adobe pdf viewer and set the view level or zoom level to 100% or 1:1 or full scale or actual size, depending on which version or pdf viewer you are using. Also, using the measuring tool make sure all the parts fit together and have the correct size.
In doubt please ask us for an opinion.

Plans Scaling:

We can scale this plan for you. But please keep in mind that if this plan is not vector, if you enlarge it too much the quality will be degraded.

3D Printed Parts
Order 3D Printed Parts for the Keil Kraft Phantom Mite

General Information

3D printing allow us to design not only complete airplane models but also parts to complete balsa, foam or even composite model airplanes.

Parts can be designed and printed to fit exactly a model you have or a model you plan to build, even if you are not building this model to the full size plan.

3D Printing, and 3D CAD allow us to create the actual parts to fit on our models but also allow us to create negative molds where we can make composite parts.

I´m adding this service to all the plan listings on the site knowing that not every part you imagine or need can be done, knowing this, jobs will be evaluated case by case and a price estimate will be given on request.

What can be done with 3D Printing:

  • Canopies
  • Cowls
  • Wheel Pants
  • Landing Gears
  • Wing Ribs
  • Motor Mounts
  • Servo Trays
  • Servo Covers
  • Wings
  • Fuselages
  • Complete Models

Full Models, Wings or Fuselages

It is possible to design a complete model for you but keep in mind that this is a lengthy process, many hours are needed to design and test a fully 3D Printed model. The finished model cannot have the same internal structure of the wooden made counterpart because it wouldn´t be possible to print it, it would have to have a structure like the models you can see in the 3D Printed Kits section of the site.

From the outside they are very loyal to the plan but still they have to be printed in sections, typically to fit a 250X210X200 mm cube that is the printer maximum build volume.

3D Printed planes are also heavier than light balsa models, all built up and ready to fly, with an electric power system they are generally a little lighter than the same model if it were powered by a glow engine. Please have a look at the 3D Printed kits section to have an idea on this.

Pricing

I will calculate a price upon request, please contact me here mentioning this PlanID: 82188 and the job you wish me to do.

Bell crank? p.r.newman on 30/12/2017 13:06
Hi! Thanks for posting this - one of my 1960's childhood c/l models with a Wenmac 0.049ci glow-plug motor. I now have a lovely Millish 0.75 waiting for something like this!

One request, please: the plan shows differential elevator throws but not the offset on the bell crank. Could you add a tracing of the bell crank to the plan if you have it? Cheers -Pete
KK Phantom Mite, elevator differential? aeroastro on 30/12/2017 17:01
G'day Pete.

You have exceptionally keen eyes to spot the elevator differential! Here are some comments and suggestions that come to mind:
- I've often used aileron differential is often used in r/c gliders to avoid adverse yaw, have never seen it in a 1/2A controllliner before. It appears that since the Phantom Mite has a flat bottom airfoil, the designer added elevator differential to enable tighter inside loops with the increased "nose up" elevator deflection. And since "nose down" outside maneuvers wouldn't be that important for a trainer, decreased the "nose down" elevator deflection.
- Method #1, modify the bell crank. Looking down on the bell crank, the hole for the pushrod should be located slightly CCW of
the normal position. How much CCW? Not very much, perhaps 3-4 mm.
- Method #2, modify the elevator horn. This may be slightly easier to do than method #1. Position the elevator horn so that the pushrod hole is slightly forward of the hinge line. How much? About the same as above, 3-4 mm. The elevator hinges must be absolutely tight, no "slop" or
"play", to get the differential and neutrals repeatedly.
- Method #3. If possible, modify the control handle in the following way. Configure the handle so when the pilot is holding the handle
with control surfaces neutral, the "up" side of the handle is tilted forward more than the "down" side. In theory, this method will work because the human wrist "pulls" more efficiently than it "pushes".

Other thoughts: the wire leadoffs at the wingtip look pretty far apart, can probably be brought closer together; make sure the flying wire connectors (swivels or clips) don't clash with each other, space them apart on the flying lines. Also - are you using an original Mills .75 or the "Indian" remake?

Good luck!
Building the later version! p.r.newman on 14/01/2019 15:25
Thanks, Aeroastro and I'm sorry for not answering your questions sooner!

The engine is a 0.5cc Mills look-alike, very much like this one: https://goo.gl/images/HhDq48 or this: https://www.stevewebb.co.uk/index.php?pid=CS05NAVOVTEGH&area=Engines - a lovely little engine bought at a local modellers' swap meet - once I'd got it ungummed (soak in cellulose thinners) it runs beautifully on a 6x/3 prop.

If you ever find a source for a 1.25 inch (1 1/4 inch for the search engines) or 32mm diameter spinner, let me know please - I've searched everywhere! Best wishes --Pete in East Sussex
searching for a 1 1/4" spinner? aeroastro on 14/01/2019 21:59
Pete,

I dug around in my bottomless pile of stashed stuff and found a metal spinner with a 1 3/16" base diameter - approximately 29 mm.
This particular spinner was purchased once upon a time for a small elecric and was never used. The base is sized for a 1 mm
shaft, probably for a Speed 400 e-motor. If used on a small diesel, it could be carefully drilled out and would probably be OK.
There's no paperwork but I believe the original source was German.

I'd attach a picture but don't think this particular message board can do it. If you'd want to see a picture, send your e-mail address
