Satellite 1000 model airplane plan

Satellite 1000

Satellite City's Satellite 1000

The Satellite 1000 - Series 70 - is the culmination of AMA gas free flight development starting in the 1950s by Bob and Bill Hunter. The "C" model shown spans 86.25" and was powered by a K&B Rear Rotor .40 running high nitro fuel on a pen bladder pressurized system.
Series 70 Satellites were campaigned in all the AMA gas free flight events - 1/2A, A, B, C, D - by the Hunters and the infamous Team Satellite free flight team. Performance of these highly evolved designs, in the day of longer engine runs than at present - was potent thanks to stiff and light semi-geodetic airframe construction as well as extensive use of light contest balsa throughout. The wings were extremely efficient in climb and glide due to airfoil tapering - chord and thickness. Construction wasn't as easy as with constant chord 'squarish' wing and tail planforms but the Satellites' performance was clearly superior, thanks to the extra aerodynamic sophistication gained through extensive development.
This reviewer was fortunate enough to have been an active gas free flighter in the 70s at the Taft flying site in Southern California and witnessed many contest winning campaigns by Team Satellite. The Hunters' and Team Satellite were extremely professional competitors and Bill is credited with the marketing of the first "superglue" - "Hot Stuff" cyano-acrylate - that was tailored to the needs of aeromodellers and sold by their company, Satellite City. The Hunters' Satellites were many ounces lighter than their competitors, also due in part to exploitation of extremely thin iron-on mylars - "candy color" painted for artistic effect - while competitors were using heavier and more fragile coverings.

To know if the file is good please download it and open it on a pdf viewer like Adobe pdf viewer and set the view level or zoom level to 100% or 1:1 or full scale or actual size, depending on which version or pdf viewer you are using. Also, using the measuring tool make sure all the parts fit together and have the correct size.

Just in case anyone needs a resized version of this plan, I can produce them from the original scans and photoshop files I created from full-size plans I redrew and uploaded a couple of years ago as "Luckyducky_96701". Redrawing the plans took about 3-months and I changed all the original fonts to a more readable script.
