Sunderland II model airplane plan

Sunderland II

great_plans's Sunderland II

The Sunderland was a large four-engine flying boat produced by the Short Bros with over 700 manufactured, providing decisive anti-U-boat service for the Royal Air Force during WWII's Battle of the Atlantic. The model presented here, the Sunderland Mark II, was a variant in the Sunderland series, and the CAD plans (thanks to "great_plans") depict a 136" span radio control model that would require four large glow (or gasoline) engines in the .60 to .90 CID class, or equivalent power electric propulsion. The 5 sheets of CAD plans are quite detailed but instructions or building information aren't included. A detailed 'build' thread for a smaller span Sunderland can be found on RCGroups <https://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?785049-Short-Sunderland> and the modeling approach there would be appropriate for this "giant" flying boat: equip the plane for 'dry land' operation to ease logistics rather than attempt to operate the model off/on water.

About the plan source:

You should verify if the source file has the quality for the type of construction you intend to do, we will print the file without any kind of enhancement or scaling. To know if the file is good please download it and open it on a pdf viewer like Adobe pdf viewer and set the view level or zoom level to 100% or 1:1 or full scale or actual size, depending on which version or pdf viewer you are using. Also, using the measuring tool make sure all the parts fit together and have the correct size.

Missing parts NavalBomb on 04/02/2017 10:40
Hi there!
I'm currently working on a Short Sunderland mk IIIa, with the help of these plans (but I'm making a downsized one), and I'm having difficulties with finding the ribs No#3 and #4
If you or anyone else has an alternative to this plans, I'd be happy if you could send them to me
Sunderland II derfred on 04/02/2017 15:13
The ribs #3 and #4 are in the plans! from the top right in the ribs page you have 1, 2, 3, 4, all there.
Sunderland II, W3 and W4 aeroastro on 04/02/2017 16:02
If you're tackling the Sunderland II, you're a much braver modeler than me! As for the W3 and W4 - it takes a little fooling around but once all the plans sheets are downloaded, I found the W3 and W4 outlines, beautifully drawn, on the third plans sheet. Let me know if you're still having problems
downloading those and I'll do further checking.

Thank you both for pointing that out, guess I missed them. Actually I kinda did them myself without the plans. Anyways, the wings are done, and so is the body, thanks to OP

You´re welcome. This plane is a huge undertaking, congratulations for the build. If possible please send me a few pics, I´ll add them to this listing.

Kind regards,

the plans are missing #3 and #4, but on the formers 3 and 4 not ribs , has anyone solved this problem , i could use some help.
Sunderland II, formers 3 and 4 aeroastro on 18/09/2017 18:10
John, you're not the first to note the missing #3 and #4 formers. Outerzone has some discussion on this point but it's not clear that corrections were ever posted there; there's a supplementary file at Outerzone that I wasn't able to open and perhaps that may hold the missing information. Note in that discussion that the Sunderland II model plan there is mis-labelled as 180" span.

A suggestion: go to a 99 Cent store if there's one in your area. A 20" x 30" sheet of 1/4" thick paper covered foam board sells there for 99 cents; the same foam board can be purchased at Office Depot but costing more. Make up fuselage former templates for #1, #2, #5 and #6, rig them accurately using the plans and straight dowels for alignment. Once the mockup is complete, it should be straightforward to create the #3 and #4 formers by interpolating between those formers, bending balsa or spruce strips over the
formers at key locations to create the desired contours. Good luck!
