Fairey Fulmar model airplane plan

Fairey Fulmar

RCModeler's Fairey Fulmar

An awesome Navy Fighter 1940 British Navy.

Regardless of who chooses to build this there are hours of cutting out perfect parts, laying them out and forming a flyable 6+ channel model.

Short history
The Fairey P.4/34 was built to Specification P.4/34 as a light bomber capable of being used as a dive bomber, in competition with the Hawker Henley and an un-built Gloster design.

The Fulmar, a navalised version of the P.4/34 was submitted to meet Specification O.8/38 for a two-crew fleet defence fighter. As it was not expected to encounter fighter opposition, high performance or manoeuvrability was not considered important, but long range and heavy armament were. The provision of a navigator/wireless operator was considered essential for the long, over-ocean flights that would be required.

Nicknamed the 'Jigsaw-Bomber' for it's look unfolding, three versions of the plane developed during WW2. The first Fulmar prototype was aerodynamically cleaner and featured a folding wing that was 16 in (41 cm) shorter than its bomber lookalike the 'Battle'. The first prototype Fulmar, acting as a "flying mock-up", was powered by a 1,080 hp (810 kW) Rolls Royce Merlin III engine. With this engine, performance was poor, the prototype only reaching 230 mph (370 km/h). With the Merlin VIII engine – a variant unique to the Fulmar and with supercharging optimised for low-level flight – and aerodynamic improvements, speed was improved to 265 mph (426 km/h) at 7500 ft (2286m), which, owing to the desperate need for modern fighters, was considered adequate.

The more popular Spitfire was developed along the same lines following the developments of the Rolls Royce Merlin III engine. Both planes faded into history as the jet age took over.

Fairey Fulmar by Don Williams

Many of the features of the original plane are brought to life with the operational flaps and retracts and built to keep it around 96 ounces. A genuine pleasure to build. Adding in all the options will require an immense amount of skill but the end result is spectacular. Try adding the folding wing option for more authenticity. Paint schemes and real photos are available all over the web.

A great flyer but great pilot required. The original article is reproduced in the article section by Don Williams himself along with his instructions for building and flying the model.

To see how it flies check out a large scale model FAIREY FIREFLY in the YouTube video.

Love building and flying. I've always flown on private property and only been involved with clubs twice. I live in southern Ontario Canada near Niagara Falls. I build at least one plane a year. I am fairly new to 3D helicopters.

Radio-Control Airplane Scale Outdoor Various-Wood-Types

My name is Donnie and I've been flying planes, helicopters, racing cars and launching rockets since 1970 when I got my first U-control plane from Carl Goldberg models. I finally got my first RC in 1983 a Cessna 182 kit with four channels. My favorite planes are 3D of every sort of aircraft. Anything capable of punching holes in the sky. IRL I work with programming and I use the skills I have to build my own designs and plans. Thank you for the donations.
