Sorta Spit 3D model airplane plan

Sorta Spit 3D

DMorris Design's Sorta Spit 3D

Sorta' Spit 3D

The 3rd plane in my Sorta' Series is ready. Sorta' Spit 3D resembles a Supermarine Spitfire, but it's designed to be a 3D-style plane, so the proportions are deliberately "strange" and not scale. So many 3D foamies look alike and have no "character" except a different paint job. I plan to use this plane to start a whole series of warbird-inspired 3D planes. On my list: Sorta' Juggy (P-47), Sorta' Forty (P-40), Sorta' Spit (Spitfire), Sorta' Warty (A-10), Sorta' Zero (Zero), Sorta' Butch (Me-109), Sorta' Lightnin' (P-38), and Sorta' Tex (AT-6). After downloading the plans, print them using the Poster feature in Adobe Reader DC and it will print the plans on letter size paper that you join together with tape.

The planes in this series can be constructed from 2 sheets of Dollar Tree Foam Board (DTFB) at a foam cost of $1.00 per sheet. You'll need four 9g servos, a 270-size motor, 10-20 amp ESC, 4-channel receiver, small piece of 1/8" plywood, and wire for landing gear, & pushrods,

Sorta' Series Model Planes
Recommended Sequence of Assembly

After cutting out all foam parts (and hinging them with 3M NexCare paper tape) and the plywood motor mount, assemble the plane in the following sequence.
I used Clear Gorilla Glue for strength, but hot-melt glue, or other suitable adhesives are acceptable.
1. Drill holes in motor mount to fit.
2. Glue motor mount in vertical part of fuselage and let dry /cure.
3. Cut temporary elevator slot extension. Save the piece to reuse or leave attached by cutting just the horizontal
edges and pushing the slot extension out of the way.
4. Glue elevator in place, replace foam removed in step 3.
5. Cut holes for servos in wing, then glue wing in place. Make sure the wing and elevator are "square" to the fuselage.
6. Glue fuselage sides in place with glue on top of wing, bottom of elevator, and edges of fuselage sides. Cover topside fuselage joint with paper tape to keep Gorilla glue foaming under control. Square everything up and clamp with clothes pins.
7. Form landing gear (if using), punch hole in fuselage and feed landing gear through. You may want to do this step before inserting the wing, but the wire gets in the way while doing step 6. Your call here. Glue the wire to the bottom of the wing and cover with paper tape.
8. Cut hole in fuselage under elevator to fit rudder and elevator servos.
9. Install control horns.
10. If you're going to paint, do it now.
11. Install servos, make pushrods and install them.
12. Cut windows from .015" acetate to fit and install using narrow strips cut from 3M Clear Mounting Tape.
13. Mount the motor and prop. Position the ESC as needed and secure in place.
14. Position the 4-channel receiver so that the antenna does not come close to the carbon fiber spar and secure in place. The battery will be used for final balancing. Shift it around so that balance is achieved, and fasten it in place using Velcro tape.
15. Enjoy :) :) :) !!!

COVID19 Notice:

If your orders placed during the COVID pandemic are delayed the reason is the reduced number of airline flights and your national mail service not distributing mail as it normally would, please ask at your local post office what is the delay currently, we just can´t tell you any better than they.

The feedback from US customers who ordered during April and May is that orders are being delivered in about one month and a half. If you ordered Priority mail you can use the tracking code I added to the Paypal transaction at the USPS (or any other mail service) website.

Order Queue:

Current queue for new orders of 3d printed kits is 2 months. (Starting on the 20th of June 2020)

For printed plans there is no queue. Prints are posted next business day.

This calculator will work on pdf and image format files, if the file is very large, 5 or even 10 Mb it will take longer to process the plan file, it may finish even after the button animation stops spinning, please be patient when calculating larger files.

What are you ordering:

You are ordering a print from the main PDF file in this listing, it´s exactly like taking this file in a thumb drive to a local print shop and ask them to make a print.

About the plan source:

You should verify if the source file has the quality for the type of construction you intend to do, we will print the file without any kind of enhancement or scaling. To know if the file is good please download it and open it on a pdf viewer like Adobe pdf viewer and set the view level or zoom level to 100% or 1:1 or full scale or actual size, depending on which version or pdf viewer you are using. Also, using the measuring tool make sure all the parts fit together and have the correct size.
In doubt please ask us for an opinion.

Plans Scaling:

We can scale this plan for you. But please keep in mind that if this plan is not vector, if you enlarge it too much the quality will be degraded.

You will receive:

  • Laser Printed plan on good quality Bond paper or/and Tracing Paper and/or Polyester sheet of the PDF file from this listing, depending on what you have purchased.
  • Rolled sheets, up to 5 in the same cardboard tube.
  • Envelope, up to 5 sheets per envelope.
  • Articles and Instructions if they are available and if you order them.
  • Air Mail, Priority, Priority Insured or Normal mail, according to your choice.

About our printers:

We use professional quality laser OCÉ and Canon printers/copiers, these printers use toner, not ink so the printings will be durable and waterproof.

About the different media types:

Bond Paper: White Bond paper, 80 grams per square meter.
Bond Tracing paper: Bond Tracing paper, 90 grams per square meter.
Polyester film: High quality polyester sheet incredibly durable, will resist cuts and glue and can be washed (I use it as sail material on my RC sailboats).

Pricing:

We charge by print length (914mm or 91,4cm or 36in. by the length of the print)
This means that a plan 120cm by 150cm will be charged two times 150cm because it will be printed in two tiles, a plan 91cm by 150cm will be charged one time its length or 150cm and a plan 91cm by 40cm will be charged 40cm.
The system will try to fit a plan in the 91,4cm of the printer width in order to reduce the costs or print length to the maximum. This is the same charging method used in any printshop.

Packaging:

We will use paper or waxed paper padded envelopes for folded plans and hard cardboard tubes with plastic ends for rolled plans, depending on your choice.
