A-10 Thunderbolt II (resized to 72 inches wingspan) model airplane plan

A-10 Thunderbolt II (resized to 72 inches wingspan)

RCM's A-10 Thunderbolt II (resized to 72 inches wingspan)

Mike Castro designed a 57" wingspan sport scale model of the Republic "Warthog" Thunderbolt II, using a single pusher glow engine in the .40 to.46 CID range. The single fuselage-mounted pusher approach yields a much simpler, yet still fairly realistic, model without the cost and complexity of twin engines (glow or turbine) installed in the twin engine nacelles. The model presented here has been enlarged by 25% to produce a 72" wingspan version of Mike's A-10, suitable for a glow engine in the .45 to .60 CID range. The modeler will need to be sensitive to the need to redesign the model's structure to handle the larger, more powerful power plant. The pusher configuration would be
well-suited for a brushless electric motor, as an e-motor's rotation is easily reversed by switching any two of the three phase wires
between the ESC and motor, allowing use of a wide range of 'conventional' propellers rather than be forced to use hard-to-find "pusher" props in a desired diameter and pitch. Modelers should take care to verify that their choice of propulsion and propeller diameter will allow adequate clearance for takeoffs and landings without the propeller hitting the ground as the airplane's angle of attack increases for takeoffs and landings.
