Gym Dandy model airplane plan

Gym Dandy

RC Modeler's Gym Dandy

INDOOR R/C flying has always been a tantalizing thought. You know - sitting in your living room, with a little six inch job buzzing around at your command. Maybe we'll see it one day - in fact, we probably will, in some modified form not in existence. Meanwhile, we have to settle for what is currently available. And it's not too bad, either.
Several years ago I published a design, called 'Warpy' (for obvious reasons) which was reasonably successful for that time. Since then, the .010 engine has been developed, transistorized receivers have improved, and most important, Hobby Poxy came into being.
Why is Hobby Poxy most important? Simply because the structure of an indoor model must be very light, and therefore fragile. This is no prob-lem with a rubber powered job, but glow fuel requires that the model cov-ering be fuel proof. If you use dope, it pulls the model all out of shape (that's how Warpy got its name), but with Hobby Poxy you can make the structure as light as the air loads will require, since the application of Hobby Poxy won't shrink the tissue and subsequently warp the structure.
Next, the .010 was a big step. The only problem is, it's too powerful, so you have to tame it down with an inefficient prop.
'Swamping' has been minimized by automatic volume control (AVC) circuits such as C&S's 'sensimatic' receivers. This is important in indoor flying because the model is frequently close to you, and swamping could cause it to 'zig' when you want it to 'zag!'
Finally, the small 'Minitron' compound escapement by O.S. eliminates the sequence operation required by the simple "bing-bang" escapement. My prototype of the design shown here has a Bonner SN, and I have to admit that too often I would "bing" when I should have "banged," so a "Minitron" com-pound escapement has been utilized to solve that problem.
Well, you still can't fly this design in your living room, but it's a real dandy for flying in a gymnasium - a Gym Dandy, in fact. So, build one up and get permission from the school principal to use the gym during some unscheduled periods.
Light weight is essential to keep the flying speed down - the prototype weighed in at four ounces! You should try to match this, because it gives a flying speed of about five to six miles per hour, and at that speed, even if the model hits anything, the only damage is to the model itself, which is easily repairable. The engine is a pylon mounted pusher configuration. Thus it won't be likely to get the prop entangled with any obstacles in case the model does hit something. The relatively high dihedral and huge rudder area makes it possible to rack the model around in tight circles without immediately spiralling down.
No landing gear is necessary. You hand launch, and with a little practice, you'll find you can fly it right to you and catch it in midair at the end of the flight.
The structure is a straightforward box, spar, and tissue framework just like old time rubber models. The tissue should be ironed before applying so that it's pretty smooth (let it cool an hour or so after ironing so it's at room temperature when you attach it to the framework).
The construction notes on the plans show all the required sizes of balsa; we don't have to go into it in any more detail, since it's self explanatory. Note the 'half size' pencells for receiver drain is small, and the O.S. escapement has a unique 'by-pass' feature that cuts the power requirement way down after the initial 'pull-in' power has been applied.
Perhaps your biggest problem will be matching the .010 power to your plane. To do this, you need a very inefficient prop - otherwise the Gym Dandy will beat itself to pieces on the ceiling!
I've shown a block from which you can carve a pusher prop, but you'll have to make a real 'club' blade in order to keep the thrust down. As a control device I've also shown a 'thrust reverser.' This is a little metal stub propeller with the blades twisted opposite to the main prop, thus counteracting the thrust. You can vary it by the amount of twist - even to the point of reducing the thrust to practically zero, even tho the engine is screaming. The amount of reverse thrust will depend on your particular plane, prop and engine combination. A couple of test flights will suffice for determining the necessary amount.
Even if you don't have a gym available, you can amaze your friends with this lumbering model by flying it outdoors on windless days. No matter where you fly it, you'll get a kick out of it. So build a Gym Dandy, just for the novelty. You'll be glad you did!

Member Profile for André

I'm André Costa (Brazil), I build and fly model airplanes since
1968 (F/F, UC). At 1974 I ingressed in RC, my first radio, was a Logictrol 3 ch, the engine was OSmax 25 rc and Falcon 56.
In the 80's I build varied scale model airplanes. In 1985 I started the construction of a experimental ultra-light airplane in wood, which flew sucessfull in 1991. Currently, I dedicate to the research of inventive solutions for light electric models.
With my son Geraldo, I’m editing plan’s for you!

Please read the Plans Printing Service Terms of Use before placing an order.

What are you ordering:

You are ordering a print from the main PDF file in this listing, it´s exactly like taking this file in a thumb drive to a local print shop and ask them to make a print.

About the plan source:

You should verify if the source file has the quality for the type of construction you intend to do, we will print the file without any kind of enhancement or scaling. To know if the file is good please download it and open it on a pdf viewer like Adobe pdf viewer and set the view level or zoom level to 100% or 1:1 or full scale or actual size, depending on which version or pdf viewer you are using. Also, using the measuring tool make sure all the parts fit together and have the correct size.
In doubt please ask us for an opinion.

Plans Scaling:

We can scale this plan for you. But please keep in mind that if this plan is not vector, if you enlarge it too much the quality will be degraded.

You will receive:

  • Laser Printed plan on good quality Bond paper or/and Tracing Paper and/or Polyester sheet of the PDF file from this listing, depending on what you have purchased.
  • Rolled sheets, up to 5 in the same cardboard tube.
  • Envelope, up to 5 sheets per envelope.
  • Articles and Instructions if they are available and if you order them.
  • Air Mail, Priority, Priority Insured or Normal mail, according to your choice.

About our printers:

We use professional quality laser OCÉ and Canon printers/copiers, these printers use toner, not ink so the printings will be durable and waterproof.

About the different media types:

Bond Paper: White Bond paper, 80 grams per square meter.
Bond Tracing paper: Bond Tracing paper, 90 grams per square meter.
Polyester film: High quality polyester sheet incredibly durable, will resist cuts and glue and can be washed (I use it as sail material on my RC sailboats).

We charge by print length (914mm or 91,4cm or 36in. by the length of the print)
This means that a plan 120cm by 150cm will be charged two times 150cm because it will be printed in two tiles, a plan 91cm by 150cm will be charged one time its length or 150cm and a plan 91cm by 40cm will be charged 40cm.
The system will try to fit a plan in the 91,4cm of the printer width in order to reduce the costs or print length to the maximum. This is the same charging method used in any printshop.

We will use paper or waxed paper padded envelopes for folded plans and hard cardboard tubes with plastic ends for rolled plans, depending on your choice.

3D Printed Parts
Order 3D Printed Parts for the Gym Dandy

General Information

3D printing allow us to design not only complete airplane models but also parts to complete balsa, foam or even composite model airplanes.

Parts can be designed and printed to fit exactly a model you have or a model you plan to build, even if you are not building this model to the full size plan.

3D Printing, and 3D CAD allow us to create the actual parts to fit on our models but also allow us to create negative molds where we can make composite parts.

I´m adding this service to all the plan listings on the site knowing that not every part you imagine or need can be done, knowing this, jobs will be evaluated case by case and a price estimate will be given on request.

What can be done with 3D Printing:

  • Canopies
  • Cowls
  • Wheel Pants
  • Landing Gears
  • Wing Ribs
  • Motor Mounts
  • Servo Trays
  • Servo Covers
  • Wings
  • Fuselages
  • Complete Models

Full Models, Wings or Fuselages

It is possible to design a complete model for you but keep in mind that this is a lengthy process, many hours are needed to design and test a fully 3D Printed model. The finished model cannot have the same internal structure of the wooden made counterpart because it wouldn´t be possible to print it, it would have to have a structure like the models you can see in the 3D Printed Kits section of the site.

From the outside they are very loyal to the plan but still they have to be printed in sections, typically to fit a 250X210X200 mm cube that is the printer maximum build volume.

3D Printed planes are also heavier than light balsa models, all built up and ready to fly, with an electric power system they are generally a little lighter than the same model if it were powered by a glow engine. Please have a look at the 3D Printed kits section to have an idea on this.

I will calculate a price upon request, please contact me here mentioning this PlanID: 97976 and the job you wish me to do.
