Jester AM model airplane plan

Jester AM

American Modeler's Jester AM

This Class II contest biplane is capable of out-pointing the one wingers, yet is an excellent sport job. It flies easily inverted and does perfect axial rolls. Ken suggests: Try a bipe, the change of pace airplane. Jester, by Ken Bonnema.
It never fails that whenever I finish a flight. Someone comes up to me and says - Boy, the bipe is really something, have you got the ailerons in the top wing or the bottom wing? Even after I've told them and they've examined both wings carefully, they still find it hard to believe that there are no ailerons. But I really can't blame them, for I sometimes wonder myself.
Obviously, the outstanding characteristic of the Jester is its rolls. With full rudder and properly timed up and down elevator, it will do continuous axial rolls for as long as you like. With half rudder and only up elevator, it will do the most realistic barrel-rolls you've ever seen. Yet, bring it down to low speed on the landing approach and it will turn just as gently as you please.
Unlike most new airplanes you see today, the Jester doesn't have a long ancestry of Jester I's and Jester II's and so on. The airplane pictured in this article is the one and only. It's only forerunner was a rudder-only .049 biplane with a tricycle gear. I called it Tripe, which is a shortened form of Tri-Bipe.
One night in August 1964, I had nothing to do, so 1I sketched a little bi-plane on a paper napkin. l looked at it for a little while and decided it was worth building, so I took i t downstairs to a drafting table and drew it up full size. I built it in four days and had it ready to go that weekend. After waiting for calm, I fired it up and it was hand launched it took off in a gentle climb slightly to the left, I corrected with some right stick, the actuator responded, and the plane almost rolled right into the ground.
Luckily, it barely cleaned the ground and started back up. By this time I had learned that breathing on the stick was quite sufficient, I took it up and decided to see what it would really do. I pointed it into the wind and gave full 'on' signal. It did one tight barrel-roll then, as it lost a little speed, it tightened into axial rolls. After two or three. of these and more loss of speed, it went into a true spin. Well, I had learned what it would do, and from then on it was a real pleasure to stunt that little ship all over the sky.

Member Profile for André

I'm André Costa (Brazil), I build and fly model airplanes since
1968 (F/F, UC). At 1974 I ingressed in RC, my first radio, was a Logictrol 3 ch, the engine was OSmax 25 rc and Falcon 56.
In the 80's I build varied scale model airplanes. In 1985 I started the construction of a experimental ultra-light airplane in wood, which flew sucessfull in 1991. Currently, I dedicate to the research of inventive solutions for light electric models.
With my son Geraldo, I’m editing plan’s for you!

Important Notice:

If your orders placed during the COVID pandemic are delayed the reason is the reduced number of airline flights and your national mail service not distributing mail as it normally would, please ask at your local post office what is the delay currently, we just can´t tell you any better than they.

The feedback from US customers who ordered during April and May is that orders are being delivered in about one month and a half. If you ordered Priority mail you can use the tracking code I added to the Paypal transaction at the USPS (or any other mail service) website.

Order Queue:

Current queue for 3d printed kits is 3-4 weeks.

For printed plans there is no queue. Prints are posted next business day.

This calculator will work on pdf and image format files, if the file is very large, 5 or even 10 Mb it will take longer to process the plan file, it may finish even after the button animation stops spinning, please be patient when calculating larger files.

Terms of Service.
Please read the Plans Printing Service Terms of Use before placing an order.

What are you ordering:

You are ordering a print from the main PDF file in this listing, it´s exactly like taking this file in a thumb drive to a local print shop and ask them to make a print.

About the plan source:

You should verify if the source file has the quality for the type of construction you intend to do, we will print the file without any kind of enhancement or scaling. To know if the file is good please download it and open it on a pdf viewer like Adobe pdf viewer and set the view level or zoom level to 100% or 1:1 or full scale or actual size, depending on which version or pdf viewer you are using. Also, using the measuring tool make sure all the parts fit together and have the correct size.
In doubt please ask us for an opinion.

Plans Scaling:

We can scale this plan for you. But please keep in mind that if this plan is not vector, if you enlarge it too much the quality will be degraded.

You will receive:

  • Laser Printed plan on good quality Bond paper or/and Tracing Paper and/or Polyester sheet of the PDF file from this listing, depending on what you have purchased.
  • Rolled sheets, up to 5 in the same cardboard tube.
  • Envelope, up to 5 sheets per envelope.
  • Articles and Instructions if they are available and if you order them.
  • Air Mail, Priority, Priority Insured or Normal mail, according to your choice.

About our printers:

We use professional quality laser OCÉ and Canon printers/copiers, these printers use toner, not ink so the printings will be durable and waterproof.

About the different media types:

Bond Paper: White Bond paper, 80 grams per square meter.
Bond Tracing paper: Bond Tracing paper, 90 grams per square meter.
Polyester film: High quality polyester sheet incredibly durable, will resist cuts and glue and can be washed (I use it as sail material on my RC sailboats).

We charge by print length (914mm or 91,4cm or 36in. by the length of the print)
This means that a plan 120cm by 150cm will be charged two times 150cm because it will be printed in two tiles, a plan 91cm by 150cm will be charged one time its length or 150cm and a plan 91cm by 40cm will be charged 40cm.
The system will try to fit a plan in the 91,4cm of the printer width in order to reduce the costs or print length to the maximum. This is the same charging method used in any printshop.

We will use paper or waxed paper padded envelopes for folded plans and hard cardboard tubes with plastic ends for rolled plans, depending on your choice.

We ship from Portugal, Europe and use the reliable Portuguese mail system CTT.
CTT has delivery agreements with different entities on each country so if you´re from the US you may have your order delivered by USPS, in the UK may be Royal Mail and so on.

3D Printed Parts
Order 3D Printed Parts for the Jester AM

General Information

3D printing allow us to design not only complete airplane models but also parts to complete balsa, foam or even composite model airplanes.

Parts can be designed and printed to fit exactly a model you have or a model you plan to build, even if you are not building this model to the full size plan.

3D Printing, and 3D CAD allow us to create the actual parts to fit on our models but also allow us to create negative molds where we can make composite parts.

I´m adding this service to all the plan listings on the site knowing that not every part you imagine or need can be done, knowing this, jobs will be evaluated case by case and a price estimate will be given on request.

What can be done with 3D Printing:

  • Canopies
  • Cowls
  • Wheel Pants
  • Landing Gears
  • Wing Ribs
  • Motor Mounts
  • Servo Trays
  • Servo Covers
  • Wings
  • Fuselages
  • Complete Models

Full Models, Wings or Fuselages

It is possible to design a complete model for you but keep in mind that this is a lengthy process, many hours are needed to design and test a fully 3D Printed model. The finished model cannot have the same internal structure of the wooden made counterpart because it wouldn´t be possible to print it, it would have to have a structure like the models you can see in the 3D Printed Kits section of the site.

From the outside they are very loyal to the plan but still they have to be printed in sections, typically to fit a 250X210X200 mm cube that is the printer maximum build volume.

3D Printed planes are also heavier than light balsa models, all built up and ready to fly, with an electric power system they are generally a little lighter than the same model if it were powered by a glow engine. Please have a look at the 3D Printed kits section to have an idea on this.

I will calculate a price upon request, please contact me here mentioning this PlanID: 98006 and the job you wish me to do.
