Tracer 60 model airplane plan

Tracer 60

R C Modeler's Tracer 60

Tracer 60 - Sport .60 powered tailless model.
Note the Tracer 60 RCM-974 and Tracer 40 (oz8121) RCM-973 plans both appeared in the same article, in RCM August 1986.
Quote: "The Tracer 40 and 60 add up to 100. Actually, either one of them is a 100 percent pattern ship. After the first glance of the Tracer you may reason that I finally relented and built the Simitar as a conventional aircraft. Well, look again, no stab! No need to worry, it flies great without.
Experience with the many Simitar (oz10187) designs over more than a decade has established a hybrid aircraft with several aerodynamic advantages superior to the more conventional aircraft. First is the no stall advantage - never a snap roll on a premature take-off, or when pulling elevator, while stretching a dead stick landing to reach the field. Next is the wide speed range, from 15 mph to 150+ mph is certainly a plus, excellent control response at all speeds. Now, add total hands-off stability - touch some aileron, and let off, it holds the turn. Touch up elevator, let off, it holds in a climb.
The significance of the Simitar 'Total Performance' had not been fully realized until Bill Winter and I got into the Simitar Slow Motion Project. Guess I had been too close to the forest to see the trees. It's interesting that I'd been flying the design all these years and took all the performance plus features for granted. Winter's comments about how well the ship performed made me realize how good the performance really is.
So, I put the 'Total Performance' advantage of the Similar configuration to work in the design of a pattern ship, result is the Tracer 60. Before I go any further, it's important to name Paul Samaras of Lakewood, Colorado; Ray Holmes, Greenville, Tennessee; Joe Misicka, Hillsdale, Illinois; Larry Smith, El Campo, Texas; Reuben Vargas and Doug Stanek both of Bishop, California. All of the above helped in the development of the Tracer by building and test flying before actual preparation of this construction article. Paul Samaras became so involved that he built the first Quarter Scale size, powered by a Bully, which pulls the 21-1/2 pounder with ease. Paul reported to me that his Super Tracer flies almost the same as his Tracer 60, a bit slower, but still snappy - stalls, loops, snaps, inverted and outsides, all excellent!
Design approach included my basic, slightly reflexed airfoil and the proven swept forward trailing edge wing planform. The Skywalker 60 (oz8133) fuselage was stretched rearward and a generous fin and rudder attached. Due to the length of the fuselage and far forward CG, the rudder moment arm is quite long and produces very good yaw characteristics necessary for pattern maneuvers.
What would be gained by adding 10 to 12 oz of gear works and servo for retracts? Also it could be that the drag created by the open wheel wells is almost equal to the drag with Used gear. The question of retracts was debated and as you can see, the easy way out, fixed gear.
As with my Simitar, the Tracer has control surfaces at the trailing edge of the wing. These surfaces function as elevators (for pitch) and ailerons (for roll). They are elevons, which produce a very smooth delivery of control response

Member Profile for André

Hello!

I'm André Costa (Brazil), I build and fly model airplanes since
1968 (F/F, UC). At 1974 I ingressed in RC, my first radio, was a Logictrol 3 ch, the engine was OSmax 25 rc and Falcon 56.
In the 80's I build varied scale model airplanes. In 1985 I started the construction of a experimental ultra-light airplane in wood, which flew sucessfull in 1991. Currently, I dedicate to the research of inventive solutions for light electric models.
With my son Geraldo, I’m editing plan’s for you!

Pandemic part II/III

Apparently deliveries within the EU are close to normal. To countries outside the EU has became mandatory an Electronic Advanced Notification meaning we are fulfilling your name and address in an online form so the customs or local post office services can process faster. This is all new and we can´t say how much things improved but will eventually do... We hope...

This calculator will work on pdf and image format files, if the file is very large, 5 or even 10 Mb it will take longer to process the plan file, it may finish even after the button animation stops spinning, please be patient when calculating larger files.

Please read the Plans Printing Service Terms of Use before placing an order.

What are you ordering:

You are ordering a print from the main PDF file in this listing, it´s exactly like taking this file in a thumb drive to a local print shop and ask them to make a print.

About the plan source:

You should verify if the source file has the quality for the type of construction you intend to do, we will print the file without any kind of enhancement or scaling. To know if the file is good please download it and open it on a pdf viewer like Adobe pdf viewer and set the view level or zoom level to 100% or 1:1 or full scale or actual size, depending on which version or pdf viewer you are using. Also, using the measuring tool make sure all the parts fit together and have the correct size.
In doubt please ask us for an opinion.

Plans Scaling:

We can scale this plan for you. But please keep in mind that if this plan is not vector, if you enlarge it too much the quality will be degraded.

You will receive:

  • Laser Printed plan on good quality Bond paper or/and Tracing Paper and/or Polyester sheet of the PDF file from this listing, depending on what you have purchased.
  • Rolled sheets, up to 5 in the same cardboard tube.
  • Envelope, up to 5 sheets per envelope.
  • Articles and Instructions if they are available and if you order them.
  • Air Mail, Priority, Priority Insured or Normal mail, according to your choice.

About our printers:

We use professional quality laser OCÉ and Canon printers/copiers, these printers use toner, not ink so the printings will be durable and waterproof.

About the different media types:

Bond Paper: White Bond paper, 80 grams per square meter.
Bond Tracing paper: Bond Tracing paper, 90 grams per square meter.
Polyester film: High quality polyester sheet incredibly durable, will resist cuts and glue and can be washed (I use it as sail material on my RC sailboats).

Pricing:

We charge by print length (914mm or 91,4cm or 36in. by the length of the print)
This means that a plan 120cm by 150cm will be charged two times 150cm because it will be printed in two tiles, a plan 91cm by 150cm will be charged one time its length or 150cm and a plan 91cm by 40cm will be charged 40cm.
The system will try to fit a plan in the 91,4cm of the printer width in order to reduce the costs or print length to the maximum. This is the same charging method used in any printshop.

3D Printed Parts
Order 3D Printed Parts for the Tracer 60

General Information

3D printing allow us to design not only complete airplane models but also parts to complete balsa, foam or even composite model airplanes.

Parts can be designed and printed to fit exactly a model you have or a model you plan to build, even if you are not building this model to the full size plan.

3D Printing, and 3D CAD allow us to create the actual parts to fit on our models but also allow us to create negative molds where we can make composite parts.

I´m adding this service to all the plan listings on the site knowing that not every part you imagine or need can be done, knowing this, jobs will be evaluated case by case and a price estimate will be given on request.

What can be done with 3D Printing:

  • Canopies
  • Cowls
  • Wheel Pants
  • Landing Gears
  • Wing Ribs
  • Motor Mounts
  • Servo Trays
  • Servo Covers
  • Wings
  • Fuselages
  • Complete Models

Full Models, Wings or Fuselages

It is possible to design a complete model for you but keep in mind that this is a lengthy process, many hours are needed to design and test a fully 3D Printed model. The finished model cannot have the same internal structure of the wooden made counterpart because it wouldn´t be possible to print it, it would have to have a structure like the models you can see in the 3D Printed Kits section of the site.

From the outside they are very loyal to the plan but still they have to be printed in sections, typically to fit a 250X210X200 mm cube that is the printer maximum build volume.

3D Printed planes are also heavier than light balsa models, all built up and ready to fly, with an electric power system they are generally a little lighter than the same model if it were powered by a glow engine. Please have a look at the 3D Printed kits section to have an idea on this.

Pricing

I will calculate a price upon request, please contact me here mentioning this PlanID: 98362 and the job you wish me to do.
