Future Flight's Klingberg Wing

Rol Klingberg designed and produced his iconic two meter span (78") slope/thermal 'flying wing' glider starting in the late 70s.
An expert aerodynamicist, Klingberg developed the wing airfoils' camber and twist distributions to provide performance and
handling similar to Lee Renaud's Olympic II, so the story goes. Small tip-mounted fixed vertical stabilizers are optional and aren't
required for stable flight. Construction requires use of a wing jig, elements which are shown on the plans sheets, along
with full size photocopies of the wing ribs. A mixing transmitter provides elevator and aileron control using a
micro servo installed in each wing panel to actuate the elevons; large aileron differential (more "up" than "down"
travel) is recommended to avoid adverse yaw at low speeds.
The "Klingberg Wing" is suitable for slope flying or thermal flight launched from a high-start bungee or electric
winch. Electric propulsion, as shown in the model shown in the picture, is a terrific option providing long soaring thermal
flights from "flatland" flying fields.

About the plan source:

You should verify if the source file has the quality for the type of construction you intend to do, we will print the file without any kind of enhancement or scaling. To know if the file is good please download it and open it on a pdf viewer like Adobe pdf viewer and set the view level or zoom level to 100% or 1:1 or full scale or actual size, depending on which version or pdf viewer you are using. Also, using the measuring tool make sure all the parts fit together and have the correct size.

Plans Scaling:

We can scale the Klingberg Wing or any other PDF plan for you. But please keep in mind that if this plan is not vector, if you enlarge it too much the quality will be degraded.
To order a scaled plan please copy the plan url or the following ID (ID:99527) and send us a message with the desired wingspan and any other info you may find useful.

You will receive:

  • Waterproof Laser Printed plan on good quality Bond paper or/and Tracing Paper and/or Polyester sheet, depending on what you have purchased.
  • Rolled sheets, up to 5 or 6 in the same cardboard tube.
  • Envelope, up to 3 or 4 sheets per envelope.
  • Articles and Instructions if we have them for the given plan.
  • Air Mail, economic and reliable.

About our printers:

We use professional quality laser OCÉ and Canon printers/copiers, these printers use toner, not ink so the printings will be durable and waterproof.

About the different media types:

Bond Paper: White Bond paper, 80 grams per square meter.
Bond Tracing paper: Bond Tracing paper, 90 grams per square meter.
Polyester film: High quality polyester sheet incredibly durable, will resist cuts and glue and can be washed (I use it as sail material on my RC sailboats).


We will use brown padded envelopes for folded plans and hard cardboard tubes with plastic ends for rolled plans.


We ship from Portugal, Europe and use the reliable Portuguese mail system CTT.
CTT has delivery agreements with different entities on each country so if you´re from the US you may have your order delivered by USPS, in the UK may be Royal Mail and so on.
Orders are dispatched on the next or second business day after purchase.


We charge according to the ctt.pt postage table.


Tracking is available and is recommended. Someone will have to sign the order at the delivery address.


Please keep in mind that when you order a plan it will be printed specifically for you, just like when you go to a local print shop.
Before ordering please make sure that the plan will fit your needs, in doubt please ask us for an opinion. If you still receive a plan you don´t like we can accept it back if it is in good conditions but we will not refund the postage from the initial order, you will have to pay the postage to return the plan to us and a 30% re-stock fee will be applied so please, in doubt, please ask us for an opinion.

Parts can be designed and printed to fit exactly a model you have or a model you plan to build, even if you are not building this model to the full size plan.

3D Printing, and 3D CAD allow us to create the actual parts to fit on our models but also allow us to create negative molds where we can make composite parts.

I´m adding this service to all the plan listings on the site knowing that not every part you imagine or need can be done, knowing this, jobs will be evaluated case by case and a price estimate will be given on request.

Full Models, Wings or Fuselages

It is possible to design a complete model for you but keep in mind that this is a lengthy process, many hours are needed to design and test a fully 3D Printed model. The finished model cannot have the same internal structure of the wooden made counterpart because it wouldn´t be possible to print it, it would have to have a structure like the models you can see in the 3D Printed Kits section of the site.

From the outside they are very loyal to the plan but still they have to be printed in sections, typically to fit a 250X210X200 mm cube that is the printer maximum build volume.

3D Printed planes are also heavier than light balsa models, all built up and ready to fly, with an electric power system they are generally a little lighter than the same model if it were powered by a glow engine. Please have a look at the 3D Printed kits section to have an idea on this.

pplassm: I suggest that you search out and print out, from this AeroFred site, the three pages of "lessons learned" that my
son and I wrote up, circa late 1980s, after having built several Klingberg Wings. If any questions from those, or any at all,
please contact me! Where do you plan to fly this and in what model mode - slope, winch, e-power?

Elijah, Fred, and others. There's a subtlety about the KW's reduced-size "plan view" drawing that's not immediately obvious. The "plan view"
drawing is there to show the overall layout and the placement of the elevons, LE, spars, etc. The model is NOT built over the "plan view"
as is normally done with model aircraft. Rather, the KW glider is built over the wing jig with the 'plan view' there as a reference
item only; this is necessary to get the proper wing twist during construction. Thus the "plan view" DOESN'T need to be full-size. The thought has occurred to me to build a smaller KW using that drawing, would be easily done by drafting up reduced size ribs.

Has anyone ever tried a foam construction? The necessary twist could be achieved by dividing the wing in sections and later glueing each section.

At one time I had the kit for Rol Klingberg's 100" sloper and in a moment of total lunacy, I sold it
off at an auction :( I recall that this model had several foam sections joined together to
provide the necessary span and wing washout. At one time I had use at MIT of a CNC foam cutter, templates-free, for which creating similar planforms would be quite easy. Any commercial foam cutter who has computer controlled stepper motors to guide the "hot wire" would be able to provide a Klingberg Wing set of foam blanks, perhaps in 3 or 4 sections per half-span.

I am seriously thinking of building a foam version. To build it in balsa would be too complicated for me since I live in a small apartment.

Let's see how it goes. I'll post my progress here if I have any good results.

Tom, I think of the following for you to consider. I think Dow blue insulation foam would be a good material,
easier to work with than white Styrofoam. Each wing half could be built with, perhaps, three or four sections
each hot wired using the supplied rib templates as guides. Remember that the LE is straight, all the curvature
is in the TE. Make up the full-size wing jig, using the patterns in the plans, and inexpensive foam board from Dollar Tree, to get the proper wing twist. I think 3/16" square, or 1/4" square spruce wing spars, top and bottom, would be sufficient to get bending strength. Wind covering could be the wide colored tape used by the combat wing folks, among others.
